How to Build a Welding TableWhen searching for instructions on how to build a welding table you will have few choices. Most welding tables look similar and all have in common, a steel plate top that can be quite heavy. Welding tables need this added feature to insure that your table can handle the heat from the welding that will be taking place.
Though there are several size tables to choose from, when learning how to build a welding table you will discover that a table of 4 feet by 6 feet is adequate. These steel plated table tops can weigh more than 360 pounds, making this a job for at least two people. Start by building two frames made of 2" x 2" x 1/8" square tubing, one for the top and one for the bottom. Add a support to the center of these frames. The legs can then be attached making them 27 inches tall. Drill holes in 4” x 4” plates of steel to attach the wheels. Add these to the corners of the bottom of your table. Now bolt on 1,000 pound capacity wheels to these plates. If you cannot find a 4' x 6' x 3/8" sheet of steel for your tabletop, you will need to cut one. 4' x 8' steel plates are easier to come by. Cut this down to size, leaving a slight overhang on each end. This will let you clamp items to the table. When learning how to build a welding table you will find that an advantage to using two frames to build this table is the use of the bottom frame. You can cut an additional 4' x 8' sheet of steel to lay on the bottom frame making a handy shelf. You're table is now complete. Discovering how to build a welding table for less money is not the only benefit fo building it yourself. You can also customize your table to your needs. Build it to the size that best suits your needs and space. Add a downdraft shoot with some extra framing or an under table drawer. Simple hooks and rings can be added just by welding them on. The cost of this simple to build table should run around $600. |
