Build a Terrarium

Terrariums are small ecosystems kept in a bottle. These are perfect for busy people who love plants, but can't devote a lot of time to their care. In this case, these individuals may seek information on how to build a terrarium. Building a terrarium is simple and doesn't take up a lot of time. Most of the time, a terrarium can be built with small plastic containers. Outside designs add an artistic touch, and make the homemade creation perfect for display. If choosing to build a terrarium, the first step involves selecting a container. An old 2-liter plastic soda bottle or plastic container is ideal. Once the soda bottle is cut lengthwise, it becomes the ideal potting space.

Next, choose the type of plants to grow. On average, it's best to select smaller, slow-growing plants. Since the growth space is limited, plants such as African Violets, Creeping Charlie's, small ferns, and moss plants are ideal. You can opt to grow several different plants in the terrarium. If so, space the plants appropriately. This way, they receive ample space to flourish. It is important to build a terrarium near direct sunlight. Search your home for a location that matches this description. An open window, sunroom, or lighted doorway is a good place.

To build a terrarium, include about one inch of gravel in the bottom of the plastic container. Next, apply a layer of stimulated charcoal, and two or three layers of potting soil. Position your plants in the container.

Once the plants are positioned properly, water the terrarium. Because terrariums benefit busy persons, everyday watering is unnecessary. The plants are growing in watertight containers. Therefore, too much water can hinder growth. Furthermore, fertilization is not required. The soil will retain all the nutrients the plants need to survive. On average, terrariums should be watered once every two or three weeks.
