How to Build a Castle on the BeachNothing says summertime better than cool water splashing against a sandy shore. Volleyball, frisbee, and wading in the surf are all fun things to do at the beach, but to build a castle is to conquer the beach – at least until the tide comes in. Sandcastles are not only great fun to build, their construction can be a fun family affair. If you are a genuine castle craftsman, you might find you’re drawing attention from other beach dwellers as it’s interesting to see what some people construct in the sand.
To build a castle, you don’t really need any special tools but they help. What you do need is a lot of wet sand. If you happen to have a few tools though, it certainly doesn’t hurt. While you can craft most anything out of sand with your bare hands, castles are best built with various sized molding vessels such as buckets, bowls, and plastic cups. Shovels aren’t really necessary, but some sort of flat instrument is helpful for smoothing walls, towers, and horizontal surfaces. You might choose to build a castle that is round or maybe square. You can build a castle as high and as wide as you have time for. You might choose to build a more traditional castle or you might feel like being creative. Whatever you build, you can’t go wrong. Start packing your buckets, bowls and cups with sand until they’re full and tightly packed. Then simply turn out your vessel onto the beach and let the building begin. If you find your walls are crumbling, your sand is too dry. Use a bucket to haul up some water and dampen your sand. If your sand is too wet, start hauling in dry buckets of sand to mix together with the wet. Before you know it, you will have built a castle on the beach that is fit for a king. |
