How to Build a Bookcase

Learning how to build a bookcase is one of the fairly basic designs when doing carpentry work. It is definitely a fairly easy task for a beginner in woodworking to accomplish and you will be surprised at how easy it is to understand how to build a bookcase. A basic bookcase that is built into a corner can add a good deal of storage space and can help fill out a room nicely. A carpenter can charge you hundreds of dollars to build a custom six by seven bookcase. You can build your own bookcase for less than half of this, where all it will cost you is the money for materials. This is also a great learning experience for anyone that enjoys working with their hands.



When learning how to build a bookcase it is easiest to buy some one by twelve lumber so you will not have the need to cut the length of the boards, and this can save a lot of time. All you really need is some basic carpentry tools such as a circular saw, screwdrivers, screws, paintbrushes, and varnish or paint for when you have the unit assembled. Once you have the proper tools and all the wood it is time to start assembling and you are on the way to learning how to build a bookcase properly. You need to properly take all your measurements and then you can start assembling the bottom and sides of the unit. Once that part is finished you need to screw the top and the back of the cabinet with some sturdy yet small wood screws. Then you need to add some wood runners inside so that the shelves can rest securely on them. How many shelves is up to you and you can figure out how many will fir your needs. In the future you could always add more shelves if they were needed. The last step is varnishing or painting your bookcase to fit your décor.
